Bridges Case Study: New Found Confidence after the Pandemic

Mike* was referred to the BBO Bridges project in June 2022. He suffered from anxiety and he was unable to leave his house. Mike had suffered from Covid and he had to be hospitalised during lockdown. He had to shut down his self-employed business. Mike struggled financially.

Over a number of weeks, our team at Green Square Accord (GSA) met with Mike at his local library. We encouraged him to attend more often. As time goes by, he started building up his confidence. He finally felt comfortable to attend a group event. We looked at several different options to encourage Mike to leave the house, such as volunteering, joining a gardening group or The Men’s shed in Aldridge.

Mike has attended The Men’s Shed for several weeks. It gave him a purpose to get up in the morning. He has rebuilt his confidence and has really come out of his shell. He has met new friends and has been attending group sessions with GSA.

Having overcome his anxiety, Mike felt that he was ready for a job to help with his finances. We supported him with advice on job searching and application. With GSA’s support, Mike has secured a position as a caretaker at his local church. Well done, Mike!

Bridges is funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund. For more information about the project, please visit stepstowork.co.uk/bridges or contact us on 01922 627555.
