BBO Bridges Case Study: Exploring Goals in Life

Oliver* joined the BBO Bridges Project with BCHFT in September 2021. He was battling anxiety and depression, which affected his mood considerably. He experienced low periods sometimes and occasionally mixed mood symptoms. Oliver would feel down often and lost interest in things that he used to like. He often got agitated and tense. This was exacerbated by a physical condition which affected his confidence and intensified his anxiety.

Our project officer worked with Oliver to express his feelings, different emotions he experienced, and explore ways to handle them well. Oliver had found many goals while being on the project. He needed help to manage his mental health and build his confidence. He also needed advice on building his CV and exploring training options. All these would enable him to move closer to the job market with the ultimate goal of securing employment.

We helped him with searching for jobs that he was interested in and showed him how he could use his wide and varied skill set to his advantage. We contacted Oliver regularly to follow-up with his progress, helped him further improve his CV and cover letter for job applications. We also helped him prepare for interviews.  Over time, he has built his confidence and he felt that he got closer to achieving his goals with the support that we offered.

Oliver’s confidence and ability to manage his changing mood has improved. He is now so different from the person that he was on his first meeting with us. He has achieved his ultimate goal and secured a job as a Grounds Operative. This enables him to work effectively using his skills and he is veryproud of all that he has achieved. Oliver is grateful for the support he has received.

“The BBO Bridges project has been really good. It helped me get my confidence back. It has helped me getting back to work!” said Oliver.
